What is a keyword
| Every time a
searcher users one of the search engines to find information from the internet he creates
a search word or phrase. It is becoming more common that phrases or a string of words are
entered to narrow down the amount of pages found and to be more precise in the findings.
These words or phrases are referred to as keywords. |

3. -
Putting keywords into phrases
| When you have your
list complete. Try putting the single words together into phrases. Make your words into
plurals. Why,?, because if a engines gets the singular word as a question a plural keyword
will match it . E.G. user types "gun" and you have the keyword "guns"
you will be in the index and be found. But if the user types "guns" and you only
have "gun" you will not be found. Many professionals will recommend that you put
in both singular and plural, but I do not recommend it.(except for Altavista which does
not have word stemming) It may be considered to be repetition by the search engines and
you may be penalized for attempting to Spam the index. If you only come up with a very few
words, because your site is very specific, then you might get away with the repeating both
singular and plural. |
|
6. -
Narrowing down your keyword list
| When you have your
list complete you now have to narrow it down to the top five for us to use in our bridge
pages. Time spent getting this right is really important. We can
get you into the top ten with most of your keywords but it will be wasted if internet
users are looking for you with different words. |
|
7.
Testing your keywords
| When you have your
top five keywords or phrases selected you should go into each of the major search engines
and try them out. Print the outcome of each search and file them so you can
see what sites were selected before we started marketing your site. Make sure
that the sites that show in the top ten are your competitors. If they are not
study your keyword list and change it until you see the sites of companies that are like
yours. |
|
9. -
Keep your whole list of keywords
Once your list of
the top five keywords are complete let us know and we'll get your bridge pages ready so
the World Wide Web can find you.
Keep the whole list because you might need to change your keywords if you do not get the
amount of traffic you expect by being in the top ten. |

How to decide on your keywords
You must consider
which are the keywords or phrases searchers will use to find your pages. If you have
several friends or colleagues who know your business well get them to assist you in doing
the following:-
I suggest you get into your word processor and start typing every word or phrase that
comes into your head. Don't try to be cute. Just straight-forward stuff. The more remote
the phrase the more precise the findings will be but you might get to the stage where you
are thinking too deep and coming up with words or phrases that may never be thought of by
a searcher. |
|
4.
Mis-spelled words can be keywords
| If any of your
keywords are easily mis-spelled then consider putting the mis-spellings in your list. Many
people never really get to grips with the "I" before "E" rule so using
both spellings here is a must. E.G. believe or beleive . You will not be repeating the
word because it will be spelled differently. |
|
5.-
Different keywords for each subject
| If you have pages
that deal with different items on your site you need to do a list of keywords for each
different page you want the search engines to find. Having the same keywords for numerous
different pages does not achieve much. Indeed, the search engines may well penalize you
for trying get your competitors off the front page of a specific search. To have the top
twenty pages only leads to upsetting the surfer who wants to find a comparison. (sometimes
the fault lies with the search engines who do not read meta tags. |

Look at your competitors keywords
| When you find a
site that is in a great position and is practically identical to your own, click on view
in your browser then move down and click on source. (it is best to use
explorer as you can click on edit and then word wrap to see the page better) Look for a
line in their page header which looks like this:- <meta
name="keywords" content="St. George Island, Apalachicola, contractors,
restaurants, Forgotten, Coast, forgotten coast, ">
This is part of the keyword list
for a site which promotes the local businesses in a vacation area on the north gulf coast
of Florida.
Have a good look at the list of
keywords your competitor is using. You may find some words you had not thought of.
I do not recommend that you copy the list because you want to do better then
your competitors. |
